Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Team Discusses Allergan Textured Implant Recall

In 2019, Allergan announced the voluntarily recall of textured silicone breast implants at the request of the Food & Drug Administration of the United States.
"Allergan plc (NYSE: AGN) today announced a voluntary worldwide recall of BIOCELL® textured breast implants and tissue expanders. Allergan is taking this action as a precaution following notification of recently updated global safety information concerning the uncommon incidence of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) provided by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)."  Allergan Worldwide
Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian has evaluated patients with textured implants given the FDA Advisory and American Society of Plastic Surgeons advisory from last year. Although Allergan cites no alarm in patients who have already have implants, many patients with textured implants still remain concerned.
There are at least four factors that contribute to the development of BIA-ALCL with textured implants:
  • Genetic Predisposition
  • Chronic inflammation associated with microbes
  • Textured implants
  • Longevity of implant placement
There has been global concern regarding textured implants, with many patients opting to remove the implants altogether. "We have seen more patients in the operating room wishing to remove these implants electively," says Beverly Hills Anesthesiologist Dr. Ramtin Cohanim. "Although there is no reason for panic, we are seeing more patients actively engaged and informed about their cosmetic surgery procedures," adds Dr. Cohanim.
