TEXTURED BREAST IMPLANTS
There are countless types of breast implants that have been used for the volumetric expansion of the breasts in breast augmentation surgery or breast reconstruction. Breast implants can be used for cosmetic augmentation or in cases of reconstruction after mastectomy for breast cancer.
Simplified, breast implants are either classified as silicone or saline, depending on the material used to fill a breast implant. Saline breast implants have an outer shell of silicone and contain a normal saline iv solution on the inside. Silicone breast implants have a silicone shell and contain liquid silicone on the inside. In the last decade, consumer demand has popularized the use of cohesive silicone gels that have a decreased chance of rupture spillage.
The US FDA issued an advisory and subsequently a recall of specific types of textured shell implants as there has been an increased risk of a rare breast cancer associated with these implants. One manufacturer of these breast implants has since issued a recall of these implants and established a fund for the removal of the textured implants in patients meeting selection criteria.
