What is a Stretchmark?
Stretch marks are usually formed as a result of rapid changes in skin tension lines. Usually occurring during pregnancy, weight gain, or weight loss, stretch marks can develop rapidly and lead to permanent imperfections in the skin. We typically see stretch marks in the buttocks, thighs, hips, and legs.
From a dermatologist’s standpoint, a stretch mark is a permanent tear in the skin that is caused by collagen loss in zones of high skin tension. When the skin stretches, microscopic tears may develop in the dermal layer that supports the skin structure. We see the initial signs of stretch marks as red lines on the skin, which later heal and regroup into atrophic scars.
American Academy of Dermatology: Why do we develop stretchmarks?
The American Academy of Dermatology Association cites four main reasons why a person may develop stretch marks; including adolescent growth spurts, pregnancy, rapid weight loss or weight gain, and muscle weight gain.
For many years, topical creams were used to support skin structure and prevent stretch marks from occurring. By moisturizing the skin, tension lines were reduced and the skin was less liable to produce permanent stretch marks . Some clinicians supported the idea of mesotherapy to stimulate collagen and elastin of the skin and redistribute tension lines so that the skin would not be damaged during periods of stress.
Recent advancements in laser technology allow for laser skin resurfacing to help improve atrophic stretch marks on the lower extremities and buttocks. These lasers can be used on the arms and breasts in patients who have linear stretch marks caused by weight gain. Laser resurfacing uses microfractional ablative and microfractional non-ablative lasers to improve skin tone and skin integrity.
Atrophic scars can be stimulated to grow collagen and elastin so that the skin may look more taut and undamaged. We use several different types of laser resurfacing devices, including fractional carbon dioxide laser and Fraxel laser to help improve skin integrity. When patients have severe stretch marks, we use stronger lasers to promote collagen building and to resurface the skin. Dr. Karamanoukian has promoted a technique of skin microresurfacing to help improve color and skin tone in patients who have lost normal skin texture as a result of stretch marks .
There are several different types of stretch marks that can develop on the body, depending on the amount of tissue atrophy. Newly developed stretch marks are usually red and slightly inflamed with varying degrees of skin atrophy. As the skin begins to heal, the redness disappears and we are often left with deeper atrophic scars that are linear in orientation and usually lighter than the normal skin. Patients of all skin types and complexions can develop stretch marks and we use varying techniques depending on your specific skin complexion. We are able to perform laser skin resurfacing on all skin types to help eliminate unwanted stretch marks.
Morpheus 8 for Stretchmarks
The Morpheus 8 RF treatment is an innovative approach to stretch marks. The technology, employs small retractable needles with radiofrequency energy delivered to the base of the dermis. The application of RF energy will stimulate collagen and elastin within the dermis and help resurface the skin, so that stretch marks appear less visible. In our experience, the benefits of a Morpheus8 treatment for a stretch marks are consistent and are usually seen within 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure. We can further stimulate collagen within the dermis by applying Morpheus8 to stretch marks, followed by the application of skin stimulating peels that can deliver growth factors to the deeper dermis in order to stimulate collagen production. When Morpheus is combined with laser resurfacing, patients notice a significant improvement in their stretch marks. Although results vary, the stimulation of skin collagen followed by skin resurfacing can help mitigate the imperfections in the skin.
Dr. Karamanoukian and his clinical staff are experts inMorpheus 8treatment in our Santa Monica and Hollywood plastic surgery practices. Our approach uses dedicated clinical data to formulate treatment plans that have both short-term and long-term success. We are able to improve stretch marks by reducing the severity of atrophy, improving skin texture, re-organizing collagen and elastin fibers, and removing pigmentary traces of stretch marks.
