Once a lipoma is diagnosed, a surgical procedure is performed to remove the lipoma and reduce its propensity for growth. 

When examined under a microscope, lipomas have a characteristic histologic pattern represented by lipomatous cells confined by a fibrous capsule. Mostly benign, lipomas have the potential for growth and malignant transformation provided they meet certain size criteria. Lipomas are best treated by early excision, preferably under local anesthesia.
