One of the more common combination platforms used for acne scars includes the use of radio frequency and dermal fillers. Our office utilizes microfractional radiofrequency and several different types of hyaluronic acid fillers to improve the contour of the skin.

 

Our first approach for any acne scar patient is to assess the characteristics of the acne scar including hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, keloid or hypertrophic scarring, and scar indentation. Most patients are candidates for a microfractional radiofrequency treatment that can stimulate new collagen and elastin production in order to raise atrophic acne scars. This treatment is highly effective but requires multiple sessions to achieve optimal results.

 

Microfractional RF delivers high intensity thermal energy deep into the dermis to initiate collagen and elastin production and promote healing in atrophic scars. Dr. Karamanoukian will titrate the intensity of the microfractional laser in order to promote skin remodeling and reduce scarring. Patients will note an increase in collagen and elastin with improved complexion and skin tone. Thw microfractional laser also reduces pore size on the nose and cheeks.

 

Acne scars can also be treated with dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane. Our office is among the few in the country that specializes in the removal of permanent fillers such as silicone, Bellafill, Artefill, and Artecoll. For this reason, we only use natural body fat through a fat transfer or hyaluronic acid fillers to smooth out deep acne scars. These hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible and rarely cause complications when injected superficially into acne scars.

 

 

Some atrophic and deep acne scars can have skin tethering to the deep dermis as a result of a large pustule that developed during an acne breakout. Subcision is a non-invasive technique that uses a small needle to break the dermal fibrous attachments that weigh the skin down. In doing so, subcision lifts up deep acne scars and provides long-term improvement in complexion and skin tone.
